Something Sunday 47: Sewing Supplies Case

Still can't upload pictures! I will try and fix the issue tomorrow, and have some pretty creations to share! Fixed it! Yay

I've been continuing to work through a long list of things to make before I move. Last week I shared that I had finished almost everything I hoped to, and I thought I should give a final update on the list today because I move tomorrow! (If you're new, read about the move here)

Update on my list of things to make before I move in 1.5 weeks tomorrow:
- Travel sewing kit (Just finished this one!)
- Pillow case to match my new bed quilt (not done)
- Messenger bag (not done)
- Christmas gifts for my immediate family - 4 different gifts (2 of 4 done!)

In the last week I finished my travel swing kit (which I'm not sure if I love yet) and two of my family gifts (thankfully I'm happy with these!). I've been on a crazy sewing bender, and I'm so glad I got so many of my sewing goals complete in the last few weeks. I'll just have to make the messenger bag and two xmas gifts once I'm settled into The Netherlands!

Now, on to the Sewing Supplies Case...

This may remind you of the jewelry case that I shared two weeks ago, and that's because I used the same tutorial and just changed the dimensions. This is approximately 2 inches larger that the original tutorial found at Gwenny Penny. I am so thrilled with how it came out, and I'm even more thrilled that I will have an organized way to keep my sewing supplies for the whole year that I am away!

The only issue I have run into is that I have very sharp sewing scissors (not in the picture) and I'm afraid they will poke right through the vinyl or the fabric, so for the time being I've just put some tape around the sharp tip. I do hope to sew a small blade cover eventually so that I wont have to keep taping them! Even with the scissor issue I am very happy with the result overall and I can't wait to get using it!

Carly's Thankful for...

This week I'm thankful for...

- being pretty much ready to move! A whole 5 days early!
- that I'm able to have a little good-bye gathering
- The fact that I got a new computer (AH! YAY!)
- The fact that I found windmill cookies!

ps. blogger is telling me I've used up all my photo storage space available. I'm not sure what is happening. So I'll have to figure that out asap because I have so many projects I want to share! Fixed! YAY!

Something Sunday 46: Laundry Bag

Last week, I mentioned a list of things I hope to make before I move... Here is a reminder of my goals:

Still on my list of things to make before I move in three 1.5 weeks:
Laundry bag for when I travel (done! And you're looking at it!)
- Case for all my tools (done, you'll see it next week!)
- Lens cap case (done, but I'm saving this one!)
Patchwork lanyard for my keys (done, but I'm saving this one too!)
Travel sewing kit
- Pillow case to match my new bed quilt
- Messenger bag (Still not sure if I'll be able to get this one done in time...)
- Christmas gifts for my immediate family (4 different gifts)

I really surprised myself this week with how much I got done! I'm so happy to feel so close to being ready!

To sew the laundry bag I used In Color Order's Lined Draw String Bag tutorial (She's American, I didn't spell colour wrong!). It is such a great simple tutorial, and easy to alter for different sizes. I used the same size, but I didn't square the corners because I wanted the bag to be able to lay flat when it's empty.

The fabric I used for the majority of the outside of the bag is actually a map of the London Underground. I found it very fitting for my travel laundry bag!

I'm sure any backpackers reading this will think I'm nuts making space for this in my backpack, but I reaaaally hate it when my dirty socks and undies are mixed in with my clean clothes. So for me, this is well worth it!

ps: The reason I'm saving so many of the items I've made on my list is because I want to have a few projects saved up for the weeks before, after and during the move. Just in case I can't get anything new made during those three weeks these items will be what I share on my Something Sundays. But I'm very excited to share them all with you in the weeks to come :)

My Favourite Crafting Tools

Back in September I wrote a little post about my favourite sewing tools, and I had a lot of fun with it, so I'm doing it again! Today I'm sharing some of my favourite crafting tools.

1. Staple Gun

I honestly don't use this that often, but when I do, it is sooo so helpful. Things like stretching fabric around a canvas to make art, or re-upholstering something. It may not be used often, but when it is, it will make your life a whole lot easier!

3. Scissors... 'nuff said

3. Glue Gun

This one is kind of similar to the staple gun, you might not use it every day but it will be very helpful when you do! I've used this to make all kinds of things, from Halloween costumes to embroidery projects, its just a handy tool.

4. Sharpies

Okay, so maybe my collection is a bit excessive, but I do use them all the time! I bought them for scrapbooking (and I use them TONS for that) but I use them for lots of other things as well. They can add some colour to a handmade card, or just make your to-do list more exciting! I like to use the fine tip Sharpies as pens a lot of the time as well. These bad-boys are some of my favourite tools!

That's all for tools. There's nothing here you haven't seen before but I thought I'd share my favourite in case you weren't sure if that 24 pack of Sharpies would pay off... and man, it will!

Something Sunday 45: Travel Jewellery Case

Oh man, I think this might be my favourite thing I've ever made (that isn't a quilt). I love it, and I can not wait to use it on my upcoming trips!

I found this great tutorial (seriously, so easy to follow) over at I think I made the whole thing, start to finish, in under 2 hours, so it was a nice easy project too! And as a bonus, it was a perfect item to use my travel fabric which I didn't have a plan for!

Don't feel like you need to look too closely to the seems in these next few pictures! It's far from perfect, but it should function just fine :)

The tutorial suggests using a snap to close up the jewellery holder, but I've yet to learn how to do that, so I went with trusty sew in Velcro. If you make sure to buy some good quality stuff (that is sew in, not sticky) at a fabric shop, it should last you a pretty long time. Plus, if you're making this, you'll know how to replace the Velcro if you do eventually ware it out.

Glad to have this item done!

Still on my list of things to make before I move in 3 weeks:
- Travel sewing kit
- Case for all my tools
- Lens cap case
- Pillow case to match my new bed quilt (I may be bringing my quilt with me.... it was suggested online that you use a quilt to protect your sewing machine when you move it, so I basically have to!)
Laundry bag for when I travel (still not sure if this will be helpful for backpacking)
- Patchwork lanyard for my keys (this one may have to wait)
- Messenger bag (pretty sure this one will have to wait too..)

Carly's Thankful For...

This week I'm thankful for..
- The fact that I was born with an ability to easily find joy in whatever I'm doing... this may seem like a weird thing to say, but every now and then I just appreciate how easy it feels for me to find the joy in things. Yes, I work at it too, but I know I have it easier than many people! (I thought the picture above went perfectly with this thought)
- The fact that I'm moving to The Netherlands in exactly 2 weeks and 4 days! AHHH
- My friends and fam putting up with my non stop chatter about my upcoming move
- Obama winning the election! :)

I'm Moving!

Good bye Canada, Hello The Netherlands!!!

Yup, I'm moving across the Ocean! But don't you fret, I'm brining Eleanor* (my trusty sewing machine) with me!

Its a bit of a long story how it all happened, but I've ended up with a one-year job contract working in The Netherlands, and really, how could I have said no to that?! I'm going to be working at a Conference Centre and Hotel and living about an hour east of Amsterdam. I don't speak any Dutch, but I reeaaaallly hope to learn, and I have already started audio lessons (using the Pimsleur method). My flight is booked for November 28th, and you can expect to see lots about the move and my adventures in the next 12 months!

PS: I plan to bring three pieces of luggage when I move which is why I made 3 of all my travel accessories last Sunday. Also, you can expect the next three "Something Sundays" to be related to the Move. I've been very inspired my the Sewing Summit "Travel Handmade" pintrest board.

Something Sunday 44: Travel Accessories

I realized recently that I have never had a luggage tag on my travel-pack... which I actually can't believe. It's such an important thing to make sure you have! (Thankfully I have never lost it) I was just planning on buying one, but $4 for a little tag seemed too much, so I made one! (Okay, I made 3!) When I was looking up tutorials, I found tons of other great things and I ended up making a set of travel accessories.

My new and cute travel tags!

The fabric squares below are just decorative handle wraps. There is really no practical reason for them, but I couldn't stop myself!

The third piece of the set is a simple cord wrap. I saw a tutorial for one using a button, but I thought Velcro would give me more room for larger or smaller cords.

You can see the tag and handle wraps attached to my lovely travel-pack below. I don't usual travel with many things that plug in, but I do tend to have at least a charger to two, so hopefully the cord wraps will come in handy as well!

I'm pretty excited to use these! I'll explain why I made 3 of each later this week :)

Carly's Thankful For...

This week I'm thankful for...
- Seeing all the family photos when I visit home
- My sister lending me the car for this crazy rainy week!!
- The fact that we even have a 3rd car in out family!
- Being able to be excited about change (and less scared then I've been in the past)
